True wisdom comes to each of us
when we realize how little we
understand about life, ourselves,
and the world around us.

the siege of Jerusalem

Picture
Image from Wikipedia
Jerusalem is the center of three major monotheistic faiths: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. But few cities in the world have been attacked as much as Jerusalem has throughout history. The Israelites under King David, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Romans, and various groups of Muslims have fought for, and many times conquered, Jerusalem all for their own reasons. In 70 A.D., the Romans attacked Jerusalem when the Jews of Judea rebelled against the Roman Empire for the first time. The catastrophic siege that occurred towards the end of the Jews’ first revolt against Rome is the subject of this post.

The political career of gaius Marius

Picture
Image from Wikipedia
The Roman general and politician Gaius Marius is remembered as one of the most influential figures of Roman history. Starting in 134 B.C. as a military tribune, Marius, through years of war and political strife, became the first Roman to be elected as consul seven times throughout his life. He reformed the Roman army, defeated Germanic tribes that invaded from the north, fought against the Numidians, marched on Rome, and became one of the main individuals who were responsible for the fall of the Roman Republic. In this short essay, I’ll chronicle Marius’ political career from the time he served in the army at Numantia to his death in 86 B.C. Then I’ll answer three questions about why Marius did what he did and what impact his actions had on Rome.

the death of adolf hitler

Picture
Image from Wikipedia
Anytime Adolf Hitler’s name is mentioned, dark and disturbing images of suffering and oppression emerge in our minds. Hitler was the notorious chancellor of Germany from 1933 to 1945. He transformed Germany into a totalitarian autocracy based on Nazism. And he was one of, if not the, main instigator of World War II in Europe. During his time as chancellor, Hitler orchestrated the Holocaust and was not only responsible for the deaths of over six million Jews but also millions from within and outside his own country. German historian Joachim Fest writes that never before had so many lives, cities, and regions been devastated as much as those that were destroyed in the fall of the Third Reich (Fest, 2004). When the Allied forces eventually pushed Hitler back to Berlin where he and many of his chief supporters hid in a bunker, Hitler eventually lost all hope of victory. Hence, he took his own life – on April 30, 1945 – along with many of his supporters who were there with him in the bunker. In this post, I will reveal the events that occurred before and on the day Hitler took his own life.

THE EFFECTS OF TEXTESE ON LITERACY

Picture
Texting is the relatively new form of digital communication that has rapidly become one the most popular ways people to converse with each other today. It can be done almost anywhere – while you’re walking down the street, while you’re waiting in line at a grocery store, and while you’re waiting at a doctor’s office. It has become incredibly popular among young people, who use it to connect with friends. However, since those sending text messages transform the English language by using what’s called “textese”, it has become a controversial issue among those who support or oppose it. This post will analyze the controversy around textese and propose a solution to the controversy.

A REVIEW OF THE ODEON'S SOCIETY'S 1984 PLAY

Picture
On April 12, 2014, I attended a play made by the Odeon Society of Ivy Tech Community College that was based on George Orwell’s classic novel 1984. Here is a link to the trailer. The Odeon Society is a student-run organization of Ivy Tech that periodically performs educational plays for the public. Their adaptation of 1984 was an excellently performed production that was presented at Ivy Tech’s Lawrence campus. 1984 is about a man, named Winston Smith, who suffers under the extremely oppressive rule of a totalitarian government – variously named Ingsoc, the Party, Oceania, and, most famously, Big Brother – that has taken control of England and other regions of the world. This thought-provoking play made me ponder about issues like fanaticism and totalitarianism. In this essay, I will reveal the traits and character arcs of the main characters of 1984.

she made it

Picture
2017

She made it! Julia finally made it to the end of her four-year-long journey at Irvington University. After years of studying, going to tutors and advisors, reading textbook after textbook, taking tests, writing essays, and taking two internships she was able to attain a GPA of 3.4 and was now ready to venture out into her career as a high school English teacher. Nevertheless, before she did that, she and five hundred other students were invited to attend the graduation ceremony in which they would be recognized for their accomplishments.

Vigilante

Picture
“No matter how sick these psychos are, never let them pull you down to their level.”

This was one of the many instructions Alex’s captain gave him when he became a police officer for the Arcadia Police Department. Alex made a personal oath to follow this instruction, and he followed it faithfully throughout his seven-year career as a police officer. But he felt the criminal he had dragged into the basement of the abandoned house he was now in was forcing him to break that oath.

the hounds

Picture
As my siblings and I
Were walking down a street
Two stray pit bulls
Approached us on the sidewalk

They came from
The abandoned, old house
That stood alone
In the distance

“Oh, crap,” I said
“Oh my goodness,” My sister said
 “Uh-oh,” My brother said
And we all stood still in terror

DO YOU ALSO WISH TO GO AWAY

Picture
As my time on earth
Continues to transpire
The strength of my inner enemies
Seems to grow ever higher

Fear and doubt comes to me
At different points in time
And the mountain of my life
Seems almost impossible to climb

As storms of trials
And tribulations blow
My faith struggles
As I fight against my inner foe

But my loving savior
Is asking me today
Will you stay with me?
Or do you also want to go away?

Evolution

Picture
My earliest memory of a technique used to teach me how to read was a group of laminated images of letters that my kindergarten teacher put in the middle of the classroom. Each letter had a picture of something that started with that letter alongside it. I have a clear memory of the letter D on that chart because the image used for D was the picture of a dolphin. I had a huge interest in marine biology when I was younger. My kindergarten teacher gave us assignments in which we wrote down each letter in their uppercase and lowercase forms. She also read stories to us that helped me develop my imagination.
